Our very own Stefania Brancato won the Gold Medal for Female Gi Adult Category during the 2018-2019 Dubai International Pro Jiu-Jitsu Championship held at NAS Sports Complex - Dubai, UAE. Competitors came from different countries around the globe. She shared her thoughts on her continuing journey in Jiu-jitsu and importantly the life lessons it provides.
"Like some of the most beautiful events in life, Jiujitsu occurred in mine unexpectedly. Growing up I had always been into sports, but martial arts was something I had a fascination for yet never approached until I moved to Dubai. I first started with kickboxing and Muay Thai until one day, at the same gym where I was training, I decided to try Brazilian Jiujitsu after several months of hesitation. Jiujitsu is a sport, an Art, like none other. It teaches one how to master calmness amid a fight, and like Ryron Gracie said: “Once you learn to remain calm under the stressful circumstances of a fight, you will have no trouble remaining calm under the stressful circumstances of life”. Jiujitsu humbles a person, it imparts the knowledge that no matter the size or strength of the opponent, you can win a fight and even without using violence; in fact, the word Jiujitsu means ‘gentle art’.
While I began training, I couldn’t grasp these principles that make Jiujitsu such unique martial art. So, I decided to make a commitment and to train with a mind focused only on my goals and not on the circumstances. I avoided comparing myself to my teammates because although we all share the same mat, our jiujitsu journeys are not the same. Although I am a very competitive person, I channeled that attitude of mine into my main goal in life: beating my last performance; it involves discipline, perseverance, and determination. For me all of that meant waking up at 5 am to work-out before going to the office, eating clean and following a healthy lifestyle, going to jiujitsu class and staying on the mats until very late in the evening to going back home tired and bruised but ready to do it all over again the next day. Also, I put into practice so many of the things I learned from working in Sprint under my manager and mentor, Mr. Hossam. He taught me and the rest of the team some valuable principles such as the importance of being well organized, subdividing a goal into a series of tasks and fulfilling these tasks through time management. He taught us to focus on strengths and not weaknesses, in building a successful plan or strategy. But most importantly, Mr. Hossam taught us the value and importance of teamwork.
All of this has been a prologue to the official beginning of a long and surely exciting jiujitsu journey, marked by a very special date: December 15th, 2018, the day of my first competition in which I won my first gold medal, at the Dubai International Pro Jiu-jitsu Championship. I wasn’t training for this event because I would have never imagined competing after only a few months of training. My coach and teammates encouraged me to try and after I signed up, my training mentality completely changed. If before I was training driven by passion and perseverance, now I’m training with a very clear goal - perform at my best during the competition, regardless of my current skills vs. my opponent’s. The support of my coach, my teammates, my amazing family and my deep faith in God have allowed me to achieve something that I have never thought possible. The words Royce Gracie – UFC Champion, coral belt and son of Grandmaster Helio Gracie serves as my inspiration not just in Jiu-jitsu but also in life: “You win the fight in the training camp, not on the day of the fight.”
Stefania currently holds several titles both in UAE and Internationally namely:
